What Size Unit Do I Need?

General Rules

The first step in figuring out what size storage unit will be your best option is to get a detailed understanding of what it is you have to store. Take inventory of your items, and be sure to get good measurements of the length, width and height of any furniture pieces. Make note of any tricky items that are larger than normal or oddly shaped. You’ll also want to get a sense of how many boxes, bins or other containers you’ll be planning to store.

A one-bedroom or studio apartment will require a 6'x6' or 8'x12' unit.

A two-bedroom apartment will require a 10'x12' , 8'x16' or 7'x20' unit.

A two-bedroom house will require a 10'x20' or 13'x20' unit.

A three-bedroom house will require a 250 square ft and may require 2 units.

A four-bedroom house will require a 300 square ft and multiple units.

A standard car will fit in no smaller than a 10'x20' unit (unless it’s compact).

A motorcycle will require at least a 5'x10' unit.

Small Units

6’x6’ Units The 6'x6' storage unit is typically the smallest size you’ll find. At 36 square feet they are about the size of a walk-in closet and great for storing seasonal items or other items you won’t need access to regularly. While they aren’t recommended for large amounts of furniture, a 6ftx6ft unit can accommodate some furniture items like a dresser or a twin-sized mattress set, making it great for summer storage for students.

Medium Units

7’x15’ Units Once you hit the 7 foot by 15 foot units, you are in medium size territory. With 105 ft of storage, these are the units you’ll likely be looking to rent if you’re planning to move an entire apartment’s worth of items. They are likely the most popular sized units for moving small apartments or condos worth of items including bedroom and living room sets and possibly dining room furniture as well. If you’re planning to store any large appliances, however, you’ll need to go for a size up.

10’x12’ Units The 10 foot by 12 foot unit provides 120 square feet of storage space, about half the size of a single car garage. These units can store a one or two-bedroom apartment’s worth of furniture or a small apartment’s furniture with an appliance or two. Because of their square shape, these units are also great for storing clunkier furniture or large items like grand pianos, for example.

8’x16’ Units The 10 foot by 16 foot unit is considered the largest of the medium-sized units at 160 square feet of space. These units will easily fit a few bedrooms worth of furniture as well as living room furniture. These are also great units if you’re looking to migrate the contents of your garage or shed to make more room and in some cases can even accommodate a compact car.

Large Units

10’x20’ Units The 10 foot by20 foot unit is the first of the large units with 200 square feet (1,600 cubic feet) of storage. Large units are typically used for those looking to store a full home’s worth of furniture and boxes in a unit. These are also great for moving larger apartments and storing mid-size vehicles long-term. In some cases, you may also be able to store vans, trucks or a small RV or boat in these units.

13'x20' Units The 13'x20' unit is the largest unit available. It provides even more room if you are storing a full home's worth of large furniture and have are nervous about fitting everything.
